The British Biology Olympiad (BBO) offers a stimulating challenge for students passionate about biology, encouraging them to develop their knowledge and skills. It provides an opportunity for students to showcase their abilities and earn recognition through widely acknowledged certificates.
– Over 60% of participants achieve a Commendation or higher.
– Flexible scheduling options are available to accommodate different needs.
– Offers a pathway to compete in the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).
The competition is open to post-16 students studying at schools or colleges, including Year 12/13 in England and Wales, Year 13/14 in Northern Ireland, S5/S6 in Scotland, or equivalent year groups internationally.
Participants will complete two 45-minute multiple-choice papers online under supervised exam conditions. These papers may be taken together or on separate occasions. The questions often extend beyond standard curricula, encouraging students to apply problem-solving skills and a strong understanding of fundamental biological concepts.
The BBO also serves as the initial step for selecting the UK team for the International Biology Olympiad (IBO). The IBO is a prestigious global competition that tests participants through both theoretical and practical challenges, involving some of the world’s best pre-university biology students from over 60 countries.
Top-performing students in the BBO may be invited to further training and assessments to determine the UK team for the IBO.
