About the USMDO

The US Medicine and Disease Olympiad (USMDO) serves as the United States’ qualifying competition for the International Medicine and Disease Olympiad (IMDO). First held in 2022, the USMDO quickly established itself as a premier competition, with eight students qualifying for the 2022 IMDO—most of whom went on to win gold medals at the international level.

Now in its third year, the 2024 USMDO continues its mission to identify and recognize the brightest minds in the field. Scheduled for August 11, 2024, this year’s competition promises to be as challenging and rewarding as ever.

Competition Structure

The USMDO consists of a single online exam, focusing on three core areas of medicine-related biology:

  1. Cell Biology and Genetics
  2. Human Physiology
  3. Human Disease

Participants face 160 multiple-choice questions, which must be completed within a 2-hour window. To accommodate the diverse locations of our competitors, the exam is accessible for a full 12-hour period, allowing each participant the flexibility to choose when they begin.

Who Can Compete?

The USMDO is open to all U.S. high school students with an interest in human biology, medicine, health, and disease. It offers a unique opportunity for those considering careers in biomedical sciences and healthcare to test their knowledge and gain recognition at a national level.

Once again, congratulations to our medalists, and good luck to all those awaiting further announcements. We are incredibly proud of each participant and excited to see where your passion for medicine and biology will take you.
